Babirusa

Babyrousa babyrussa

The babirusa, also known as the "deer-pig," is a unique species of wild pig native to the islands of Indonesia, particularly Sulawesi, Togian, and Buru. These fascinating creatures are easily recognized by their distinctive appearance, characterized by long, curving tusks that emerge from the upper jaw and curve backward toward the forehead. Babirusas have a slender body with short, coarse hair and a prominent snout. They typically inhabit tropical rainforests and swamps, where they forage for food such as fruits, leaves, and small invertebrates. Babirusas are known for their solitary nature and are primarily active during the night, making them elusive and rarely observed in the wild. Despite their unique appearance, babirusas are considered vulnerable due to habitat loss and hunting pressures. Visitors to the Toronto Zoo can marvel at these fascinating creatures and learn more about their conservation status and the efforts being made to protect them in the wild.
